Albertine Grants

GRANTS TO FRENCH & FRANCE-BASED ARTISTS.

Institut français-Paris, the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States and FACE Foundation joined forces in 2017 to launch a new residency program: Etant donnés Residencies, in order to support French visual artists seeking to spend 2 to 4 months in the United States, in a residency organized in partnership with an American organization.

THE CALL FOR APPLICATIONS IS CLOSED.
Next Deadline: To Be Announced.

Guidelines

Etant donnés Residencies support French visual artists seeking to spend a minimum of 2 and maximum of 4 months in the United States, in order to pursue research or develop specific projects in collaboration with an American organization. The residency will enable them to become immersed in the American art world and develop new contacts and networks. It aims to promote the integration of French artists into the American contemporary arts scene and generate collaborative projects that may continue beyond the residency.

Etant donnés Residencies is intended for French artists (or those living in France for more than 5 years) who have already initiated a collaboration with a partner organization in the United States willing to support their research, facilitate the development of their artistic project, and help them develop their network. The artist will also be assisted by the teams of Institut français-Paris and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy.

In 2021, 3 artists will be selected by Etant donnés’ Artistic Committee.

The Etant donnés-Institut Français Residency:

– 3 artists (French or based in France for a minimum of 5 years) will be awarded a grant of 10,000 euros allocated by Institut Français-Paris. This grant will help them cover the costs of a 2 to 4 months residency that will take place between June 1, 2021 & August 31, 2022.

The candidates must:

  • Apply individually;
  • Be an artist within a discipline in the visual arts;

  • Speak English;

American Partners:

The artist must be accompanied by an American organization: art centers, museums, galleries, multidisciplinary cultural centers, libraries, and universities are eligible.
Projects in collaboration with an artist residency program are eligible only if the partner organization provides assistance and expertise beyond the rental of a studio.

The partner organization is committed to supporting the artist by providing:

  • Tailored advice
  • Facilitation of research and access to resources,
  • Connection to the right professional networks depending on the project
  • Opportunities for networking and exposure (interaction with curators, critics, collectors, etc.)

The partner organization may provide a studio or dedicate a staff member to accompany the artist in his or her project, but this is not mandatory.

Priority will be given to partnerships with organizations planning to present the work of the artist in one way or another via an exhibition, talk, lecture, screening, performance, etc., either in their space or at partnering venues.
